RAS 02 – Waking up the Sunnah way!

The reason why people refer to Islam as a way of life rather than a religion is that it guides us in all aspects of our life. From the big stuff, like beliefs and ibadah, to the tiniest things that we – most of the time – have no idea about!

This week Insha’Allah we will look at the way the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) woke up from his sleep and how easy it is for all of us to gain so much ajr, from the very moment we open our eyes in the morning.

What to Do When Waking Up

1. Wipe the effects of sleep from the face

When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) woke up he would sit and rub the traces of sleep off his face with his hands. [Bukhari]

2. Read the dua for waking up

Narrated Hudhayfah, “When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) got up he would say:

الْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyaana ba’da ma amaatana wa ilayhin-nushur.

All praise is to Allah Who gave us life after death (sleep) and unto Him is the return. [Bukhari]

3. Use miswak

Whenever the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) got up at night, he used to clean his mouth with siwak (miswak). [Bukhari]

4. Wash hands three times

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) said: “When anyone amongst you wakes up from sleep, he should wash his hands three times before putting it in the utensil…” [Muslim]

5. Snuff water up the nose

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) said, “If anyone of you rouses from sleep and performs the ablution, he should wash his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out thrice, because Satan has stayed in the upper part of his nose all the night.” [Bukhari]

Action Points

  • Many times we do these things (such as washing the hands) in the morning but without thinking or realising they are part of the Sunnah. Next time make the intention and earn the reward.
  • In the morning it’s hard to remember to implement some of the above sunan, especially when you are feeling so sleepy. Write them down and stick them somewhere near your bed as a reminder.
