RAS 04 – Start with the Right Foot

July 30, 2010

Implementing the sunnah is really very easy, simply because the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) provided guidance in all matters of our lives. Even when it comes to something as trivial as putting on shoes we have a chance of earning reward.

How to Put On / Take Off Shoes

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) said, “When any of you puts on his shoes, he should put on the right one first; and when he takes them off, he should begin with the left. Let the right shoe be the first to be put on and the last to be taken off.” [Bukhari]

Did you know?

  • The Prophet only ever owned 3-4 pairs of sandals in his whole life.
  • It is not allowed for a person to walk with one shoe as this is the walk of Shaytan.

Action Points

  • This is a very simple sunnah to follow as long as you remember! Keep this hadith in mind when putting on and taking off shoes.
  • Teach your siblings / children this sunnah, so that it becomes a habit for them while they are young.

The Mother’s Heart

July 28, 2010

One day a man tempted an ignorant boy
Using his money, in order to achieve his objective

He said, “O young one, bring me the heart of your mother
And money, jewels and pearls will be yours!”

So he went and plunged a dagger into her chest
And took out the heart and returned the way he came

But because of his haste, he fell
And the dusty heart rolled away as he stumbled

The heart of his mother called him, and he was covered in dust,
“My son! My beloved! Are you hurt?!”

The voice, although it was so gentle, yet
It was like the wrath of the Heavens had fallen on the boy

Thus he understood the enormity of his betrayal that nobody
Had committed but him in the history of mankind

So he rushed back to the heart washing it with the tears
Of his eyes that flowed from the flood of sorrow

And he said, “O heart! Take your revenge from me and do not
Forgive, because my crime is unforgiveable.

And if you forgive then surely I will kill myself
Like those before me who have committed suicide.”

So as he unsheathed his dagger to kill himself,
A stabbing that would remain as an example to those who seek lessons,

The heart of the mother called him saying, “Stop your hand and do not
strike my heart twice in succession!”

RAS 03 – Sending Salaam on the Prophet

July 23, 2010

So we learnt about the importance of giving salaam to others, but did you know that it is the way of Allah and the angels to send salaam on the Prophet

Allah tells us in the Qur’an:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ۚ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ

وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا

Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O you that believe! Send your blessings on him, and salute him with all respect. [Surat al-Ahzab, 33:56]

So if Allah sends peace and blessings on the Prophet, and so do the angels, then shouldn’t we? This is an important sunnah that really needs to be revived. Not because we don’t do it at all, but because we don’t do it enough!

Fasting in the Month of Sha’ban

July 19, 2010

With everything, practice makes perfect. That goes for fasting too!

With super long days, this year ramadhan is going to be tough, but only if you haven’t prepared! The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) encouraged us to fast during the month of Sha’ban calling it the neglected month. We should all try and fast a few days, preparing for the month ahead!

Hadith regarding Fasting in Sha’ban

Usamah ibn Zayd (radiAllahu anhu) said: I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلّم), I do not see you fasting in any other month like you fast in Sha’ban.’ He said, ‘That is a month to which people do not pay attention, between Rajab and Ramadan, and it is a month in which deeds are lifted up to the Lord of the Worlds. I like for my deeds to be lifted up when I am fasting.’ [Al-Nasa’i]

Aisha (radiAllahu anha) said: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) did not fast in any month more than Sha’ban, and he used to fast all of Sha’ban and he used to say: “Do as much of good deeds as you can, for Allah does not get tired (of giving reward) until you get tired.” And the most beloved of prayers to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) was that in which one persists even if it is little. When he offered a prayer he would persist in doing so. [Bukhari]

RAS 02 – Waking up the Sunnah way!

July 16, 2010

The reason why people refer to Islam as a way of life rather than a religion is that it guides us in all aspects of our life. From the big stuff, like beliefs and ibadah, to the tiniest things that we – most of the time – have no idea about!

This week Insha’Allah we will look at the way the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) woke up from his sleep and how easy it is for all of us to gain so much ajr, from the very moment we open our eyes in the morning.

Honour Your Parents

July 13, 2010

And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor reprimand them but address them in terms of honor. And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: “My Lord! Bestow on them Your mercy as they did bring me up when I was young.” [Surat al-Isra’, 7:23-24]

RAS 01 – Spread Salaam

July 9, 2010

We all know that we should meet and greet each other with salaam, but how many times have we seen our friends and greeted them with something else? How many times have we seen a Muslim on the street and looked the other way?

Importance of Salaam

A man asked the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلّم), ‘What is the best thing in Islam?’ He said, ‘Feeding others and giving the greeting of salaam to those whom you know and those whom you do not know.’ [Bukhari]

Did you know?

  • Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) used to go out to the market place just to give salaam to the people.
  • As salaamu alaykum is the greeting of paradise – “Their greeting therein will be: ‘Peace!’” [Surah Ibrahim, 14:23]
  • The angels reply to you when you give salaam to others.

Action Points

  • Get into the habit of greeting your friends and family with salaam, and the best salaam at that – as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. Bagging yourself 30 hasanat in the space of a few seconds.
  • It’s easy to give salaam to people we know, but what about those we don’t know? This week try and give your salaam to at least 10 people that you don’t know.
  • When entering and leaving the house give salaam, even if the house is empty – the angels will reply.

Project: Revive a Sunnah

July 7, 2010

Over the coming weeks and months I will Insha’Allah post up a forgotten/neglected Sunnah for us all to start implementing. Every Friday I will post up a new Sunnah giving us a week to introduce it to our daily routines.

The Importance of the Sunnah

It goes without saying that our only way to Jannah is to follow the footsteps of our beloved Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). He came to teach us or deen and is the most perfect example, as Allah says:

لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الآخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا

Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much. [Surat al-Ahzab, 33:21]

Reviving the Sunnah

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Whoever revives an aspect of my Sunnah that is forgotten after my death, he will have a reward equivalent to that of the people who follow him, without it detracting in the least from their reward.” [al-Tirmidhi]

Action Points

  • Drop by the blog every Friday and start reviving a Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Share your thoughts, comments and encouragement for others.
  • If you would like to see a particular Sunnah posted you can email me and Insha’Allah it will posted up – earning you lots of reward.
  • Make intention for these Sunnahs to become part of your daily routine, not just for a week or two, but for life!
