To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names

May 31, 2009

To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names. All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify Him. [Surah al-Hashr, 59:24]

Humiliated till the end of time

May 24, 2009

Surah al-Masad was one of the earlier surahs to be revealed. After the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) was commanded by Allah to openly call the people of Makkah to Islam, he stood on Mount Safa and shouted, ‘Ya Sabahah!’ [This was an expression of warning, used to warn people of a danger.]

All the Quraysh gathered around, wondering what it could be that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) was warning them of. Then he (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) asked, ‘If I told you all that the enemy was going to attack you in the morning, or in the evening, would you all believe me?’

They replied, ‘Yes, we have never experienced any lie from you’

Then he said, ‘Verily, I am a warner (sent) to you all before the coming of a severe torment.’

Then Abu Lahab said,Have you gathered us for this? May you perish

Thus, Allah revealed the verses of Surah al-Masad:

Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he!

His wealth and his children (etc.) will not benefit him!

He will be burnt in a Fire of blazing flames!

And his wife too, the carrier of firewood.

In her neck is a twisted rope of Masad (palm fibre).

1. People will talk. No matter what you do, people will talk. This is especially the case when you give da’wah. As soon as you call people to the truth they will speak out against you. It could be your own family members, but we have to stay firm and trust in Allah.

2.  See how much he (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) has done for us. Just think for one second how humiliating it must have been for the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) to stand there and call people to the truth and then his uncle (of all people) come and respond to him in such a manner. Try and imagine how you would feel. He (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) did that for US and look how most of us repay him – by sinning and following other than his example.

3. Allah is the defender of the Prophet The above verses were revealed immediately after that incident. Abu Lahab’s intention was to humiliate the Prophet and he may have suceeded for that one momenet but see how Allah  responded, humiliating him until the end of time. Right until the Day of Judgement there will be people, even small children reciting; Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab.

Qur’an Bearers: Nobles of this Ummah

May 22, 2009

Imam al-Jazari’s praise for the Qur’an bearer – Taken from the Muqaddimah of ‘Tayyibat al-Nashr.’

From: Fajr

A person is not honoured or raised
Except by what he knows and has memorised

For that reason the bearers of Qur’an
Are the nobles of this Ummah and its righteous

And they are the people of Allah amongst Mankind *
And indeed our Lord has boasted of them

He spoke of them in the Qur’an, and it is sufficient
That He gives it (the Qur’an) to those He has chosen **

And in the Hereafter, it is an ardent intercessor
And its statement is something surely heard

By it a person is given the dominion and immortality
And likewise, he is given the crown of honour

He’ll read and ascend the ranks of Paradise by it
And his parents will also be clothed by it ***

So let a person strive to attain it
And let him never tire of its recitation.

* Due to the hadith: ‘Indeed Allah has people from amongst Mankind. The people of Qur’an, they are the people of Allah and His Specialties.’ [Ahmad, Ibn Majah]

** Due to the verse in Soorah Fatir:

ثُمَّ أَوْرَثْنَا الْكِتَابَ الَّذِينَ اصْطَفَيْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا فَمِنْهُمْ ظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِ وَمِنْهُم مُّقْتَصِدٌ وَمِنْهُمْ سَابِقٌ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَضْلُ الْكَبِيرُ

“Then We gave the Book for inheritance to such of Our slaves whom We chose…” [Fatir: 32]

*** Due to the hadith: ‘The Qur’aan will meet its companion on the Day of Resurrection when his grave is opened for him, in the form of a pale man. It will say to him, ‘Do you recognize me?’ He will say: ‘I do not recognize you.’ It will say: ‘I am your companion the Qur’aan, who kept you thirsty on hot days and kept you awake at night. Every merchant benefits from his business and today you will benefit from your good deeds.’ He will be given dominion in his right hand and eternity in his left, and there will be placed on his head a crown of dignity, and his parents will be clothed with priceless garments the like of which have never been seen in this world. They will say: ‘Why have we been clothed with this?’ It will be said: ‘Because your son used to recite Qur’aan.’ Then it will be said to him: ‘Recite and ascend in the degrees of Paradise,’ and he will continue to ascend so long as he recites, either at a fast pace or a slow pace.’ [Ahmad, Ibn Majah]

Knowledge is Light

May 19, 2009

I complained to Waki about the weakness of my memorization,

So he guided me to the abandonment of sin

And he said, Verily, the knowledge of Allah is light

And the light of Allah is not given to sinners

[al-Imam ash-Shafi’ee]

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) used to seek protection against the evil eyes of the Jinns and mankind. But when the Mu’awwidhatayn (Surah an-Nas and Surah al-Falaq) were revealed, he used them (for protection) and abandoned all else besides them. [Tirmidhi]

Check in: Surah an-Nas, al-Falaq and al-Ikhlas

May 12, 2009

As salaamu alaykum,

So we are three days into the challenge, that means you should be on your way to memorising one to three surahs insha’Allah:

  1. Surah an-Nas
  2. Surah al-Falaq
  3. Surah al-Ikhlas

How are you getting along?

Virtues of Surah al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم) said, “Say: He is Allah, Absolute Oneness” (Surah al-Ikhlas), ‘By Him in Whose hand my soul is, it is equal to one third of the Qur’an!’ [Sahih al-Bukhari]

Whenever the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلّم)  go went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times. [Sahih al-Bukhari]

If you have already memorised these surahs that’s great, but before you rush ahead:

  • Make sure your recitation is spot on and all your mistakes are corrected.
  • Read the translation
  • Read the tafsir (commentary)

Sunday: The Lakeside Adventure

The Lakeside - Isn't it big?

Sunday 11:00am: We set off around the lake, for a gruelling FOUR rounds!

The young ones were hyped and at times uncontrollable, but thanks to our child warden, with her oh so cool whistle (that she stole 😉 ) and our child minder rounder upper (how’s that for a job title?) who had to run after the odd kid who tried to make a break for it, we managed (Or should I say they cos I didn’t do much myself)

The weather was perfect and the company was great (though there was some bullying going on ;)). The little ones ran, sang, hopped, jumped and skipped around the lake. The rest of us just strolled along.

Lunch time came, we enjoyed a nice picnic and then back around we went for the final two laps. By the end we we’re all exhausted but it didn’t matter because we all made it to the finishing line alhamdulillah!

To the totally cool Young Muslimahs – May Allah reward you for your hard work. You guys raised SO much money, I can’t believe it! You totally rock dudes!

Jazakum’Allah khayr to all that took part, making it a really fun and enjoyable day.

Want to raise your rank in Jannah?

May 4, 2009

Time to take ACTION. No ifs and buts, no lame excuses, just pure determination to raise your rank in Jannah!

The Juzz Amma Challenge – What is it?!

The Prophet said: “The one who was devoted to the Qur’an will be told on the Day of Resurrection: ‘Recite and ascend (in ranks) as you used to recite when you were in the world. Your rank will be at the last ayah you recite.’”[Abu Dawud]

This hadith is telling us that those who memorised the Qur’an will be asked on the Day of Judgment to recite that which they had memorised and as they do so their rank in Jannah will be raised. So, the more you know, they higher up in Jannah you go!

There is such tremendous reward for reciting the Qur’an and even more so for memorising it. On the Day of Judgement not only will the Qur’an cause our ranks to be raised in Jannah, it will intercede on our behalf, saving us from the fire of Hell.

There are so many of us out there who would like to memorise the Qur’an (or at least parts of it), but how many of us actually take the necessary action? Saying you want to memorise the Qur’an is not enough, you have to ACT to make that goal a reality.

So let’s throw away all our excuses, stop being lazy and step up and take the challenge. Let’s memorise Juzz Amma, me, you and everyone else who is brave enough, all working together for the sake of Allah. Let’s do it and raise our rank in Jannah. (more…)
